A few Questions about the Earth Science Education Program:
What education programs does the Geology Department offer?
We offer major programs in Elementary and Secondary Earth Sciences, combined major programs in Secondary Earth Science/General Science, and a minor program in Geology.Does the B.A./Ed degree lead to teacher certification?
No, but they do lead to recommendations for endorsement in earth science or general science. For the Earth Science or Earth Science/General Science programs, students must complete the teacher certification program offered by the Department of Secondary Education.
For the Earth Science-Elementary program, the professional preparation
program in elementary education must be completed.
How can the certification program be completed?
- The student must apply to Woodring College of Education
after they have made substantial progress in the Geology
part of the BA in Ed degree. Woodring offers the
final professional preparation program that leads to certification
What are the requirements for the Elementary Earth Science B.A./Ed?
- Geol 211, 212, 310, 311 (or 306 and 406), 340; EGEO 331 or Geol 252
- Math 114 and 115, Chem 121 and 122, EGEO 203, Physics 114, Astronomy 103 or 315

- Electives: (two of: Geol 214, 308, 309, 314, 315, 316, 318, 352, 400, 410a, 410b, 414, 415, 430, 440; EGEO 431, 432; Astronomy 316; Biol 406)
- the professional preparation program in elementary education must be
completed in the Woodring College of Education
What are the requirements for the Secondary Earth Science B.A./Ed?
- Geol 211, 212, 214, 310, 311 (or 306 and 406), 340; EGEO 331 or Geol 252; Astron 315

- it is recommended that this major be accompanied by a minor in chemistry, physics, or biology
- the teacher certification program offered by the Department of Secondary
Education must be completed in the Woodring College of Education
What are the requirements for the combined Secondary Earth Science/General Science B.A./Ed?
- Geol 211, 212, 214, 306, 310, 340, 407a; EGEO 331 or Geol 252; Astron 103 or 315
- Math 114 and 115, Chem 121, 122; Physics 114, 115
- SciEd 370, 481, 491

- the teacher certification program offered by the Department of Secondary
Education must be completed in the Woodring College of Education
- this program leads to recommendation for teaching endorsements in earth science (4-12) and science (4-12).
Before I was a geology major, I took Geology 101. Now I want to take additional geology classes. Do I need to take all of Geology 211, or can I just take the labs?
As of Fall 2006, you can "upgrade" Geology 101 by taking Geology 211a, a special lab section of Geology 211.
