Advising: Questions from transfer students to Geology

What degrees does the Geology Department offer?

For undergraduates we offer a B.A., B.A./Ed, and B.S. degree, and we offer an M.S. degree for graduate students.

I'm transferring to Western, and want to know what my geology classes count for.

Here is a handy table for students transferring from public colleges or universities in Washington State: transfer table

If you are transferring from outside Washington State, or from a private institution within Washington, please contact the Geology transfer advisor (Robert Mitchell) for information about transfer equivalencies.

What is the difference between the B.A. and B.S. degrees?

The Bachelor of Arts degree provides you with a very general education in geology, and should be combined with a minor in another field such as math, physics, biology, or journalism. The Bachelor of Science degree gives you more in-depth knowledge of geology and prepares you as either a professional geologist, or for graduate studies in any of the Earth sciences.

How do I declare as a Geology major?

You must have completed Geology 211 with a grade of C- or better. Then, drop by the department office in ES 240 to get the declaration of major card to be filled out.

I don't have enough math classes yet. Can I still declare as a major?

You may declare as a major after completing Geology 211. Math 114 (or the equivalent) is a prerequisite for Geology 211.

If you need to take additional math courses, contact the Testing Center as soon as possible to schedule a Math Placement Exam.

I only have the equivalent of Western's Geology 101. Now I want to take additional geology classes. Do I need to take all of Geology 211, or can I just take the labs?

As of Fall 2006, you can "upgrade" Geology 101 by taking Geology 211a, a special lab section of Geology 211.
